Virtual TapeServer Overview
Backup and restore have been a source of constant irritation for IT administrators for as long as online information and tape drives have existed. The problems include:
- Slow backups and shrinking backup windows
- Slow restores and recoveries
- Difficulty finding the right tape and file to recover
- Costly media and backup labor
Crossroads’ Virtual TapeServer (VTS) responds to these problems by delivering a new backup paradigm to the enterprise IT computing world. VTS combines traditional tape backup methodologies and inexpensive and reliable disk storage to create an optimized backup and recovery environment.
Faster, More Reliable Backups
VTS emulates a tape library by storing data onto disk as it would onto tape - but many times faster. Since the system can take advantage of the error correcting properties of modern disk subsystems, backups are also more reliable. The hassles of tape rotations and media failures are a thing of the past.
Faster, More Reliable Restores
Administrators are no longer challenged to find the file to be recovered – they are all on line. And since there is no reliance on physical tapes, there are no issues with defective media.
More Efficient and Effective Backup Procedures
With VTS these is no longer a need to manage media. This reduces hard costs and the labor required to procure, rotate, store and retire the physical tapes. For more detailed information, please read the whitepaper Examining the Costs of Tape Operations: A Financial View.
Integrates with Existing Backup Management Applications
VTS seamlessly integrates with industry standard backup management applications (BMA), like Symantec Veritas NetBackup, EMC Legato Networker and IBM Tivoli TSM. This allows organizations to protect investments in existing backup applications, workflows and policies.
Organizations can also export data stored on VTS to a BMA-managed tape drive or library using commends initiated using the VTS GUI or from any attached BMA using user-defined policy files. Files can be restored to VTS from the BMA-managed tape system in a similar manner.
Other VTS benefits include the ability to extend VTS to support a multi-site disaster recovery strategy.
